Maruti Suzuki Dzire: Old Wine In A New Bottle!

From a Swift strapped with a boot to a household name, the Dzire has held well over its course of time in the Indian market. The first-generation Maruti Suzuki Dzire was, essentially, a Swift slapped with a huge boot. As practical as it was, the Swift Dzire was uncanny and rather unproportioned.

The second-gen of the Swift Dzire was a better-looking car. The roof, this time around, was attached rather cohesively with the boot. But, the Swift Dzire was under four metres in length, so it was termed as a compact-sedan, and hence, was comparatively smaller than the model it replaced.

Back to the present, and the car you see above is the Dzire in the third-generation. To carve its own identity, it loses out on the Swift moniker too. And more importantly, it forayed in the compact-sedan space before its hatchback sibling, creating a notion in people’s head that this is perhaps not just a hatchback with a boot. A perfect marketing job, it seems.

Specifications

It’s commendable how designers at Maruti Suzuki have worked for the Dzire. Unlike the last-gen car, the roof now merges with the boot rather perfectly, giving the car a well-proportioned look and a nice stance. In terms of dimensions, the length remains the same at 3,995mm, while the width and height are revamped, now at 1,735mm and 1,515mm, respectively. The base-spec trim is just 860kg. The ground clearance is reduced to 163mm. The wheelbase is a healthy 2,430mm.

The Dzire boasts no mechanical changes. Therefore, it is still powered by the same K12 series 1,197cc four-cylinder engine good for 82bhp and 113Nm of torque and the Fiat-sourced 1,248cc turbo-diesel engine capable of churning out 74bhp and 190Nm of torque. The former is now BS-VI compliant while the latter is expected to be axed out before the April 2020 deadline. Both the engines come with the option of a 5-speed manual or an AMT.

Mileage

Irrespective of the powertrain, the Maruti Suzuki  Dzire has a fueltank capacity of 37-litres. As far as the fuel efficiency numbers are concerned, the petrol-manual and petrol-AMT are certified for 22km/l by ARAI, in BS-VI guise. The diesel, on the other hand, is far more efficient at 28.4km/l, again for both manual and AMT.

Features

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire is, by far, one of the most well-equipped compactsedans in the segment. Going by the exteriors, the top-spec ZXi+/ZDi+ trim you see here comes factory fitted with goodies such as LED-powered projector headlamps with DRLs, LED taillamps, 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, electronically retractable and adjustable ORVMs, and then some. Inside, the main highlight is the company’s Smartplay infotainment system (replete with Apple Carplay/Android Auto), push-button start, informative MID, climate control, rear armrest, rear AC vents, and leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel with dedicated controls for the infotainment system.

Colours

The Dzire, as of early-2020, comes in six shades, namely, Oxford Blue, Gallant Red, Sherwood Brown, Magma Grey, Silky Silver, and Pearl Arctic White. The paint quality for all the shades is excellent. To our eyes, the Oxford Blue looks the most contemporary and mature. However, it’s the Gallant Red shade that’s sure to entice the most flamboyance.
